Hello and Welcome!

Welcome to our Little Cottage on the Rock! We hope you enjoy your stay. Here are a few tips and tidbits to help you get your bearings.

Linens & Towels

Linens and towels have been provided for your convenience. There is a washing machine off the bathroom that is available for use but there is no dryer. A clothesline is on the second story deck. There is generally a breeze for good drying. Should inclement weather prevent you from using this method, a number of laundromats are in the vicinity (see directions below).

Note: Although it may be tempting to hang damp towels from the loft rails in upstair bedrooms, please refrain! It darkens the wood. Use the towel rack in the master bedroom, the wall hooks in the upstairs bedrooms, or the clothesline. Thanks for your consideration!

Kitchen

You will find many pots, pans, baking pans, a hand mixer, electric frying pan, etc. in the kitchen for your use. We ask only that you return them in a clean condition to their original locations when you finish using them. Spices are available for your stay as well. A limited number of paper products, dish detergent, and baking ingredients are provided as a courtesy, but are not anticipated to be sufficient for your stay.

Lobsters!

Preparing and eating lobster? A lobster pot is located in the lower cupboard beside the stove (and a larger one is in the pantry). Large lobster plates are stored below the pot. Lobster “crackers” are in the silverware drawer behind the silverware. Placemats explaining how to eat a lobster are located in the pull drawer beside the kitchen door. Have fun!

Grilling

There is a propane grill on the deck. We do NOT guarantee that the propane tank will be full however, as there are many families in and out over the summer. Should you choose to use it, please shut the TANK as well as the grill off when you finish. Please be considerate of the next folks to use it by cleaning off the grill. If you get “stuck” without propane and feel you need it, the Lamoine General Store has a propane exchange. So does Home Depot in Ellsworth. It’s about $17 to swap the empty for a full tank.

Safety Features

A list of emergency numbers is located in an informational notebook at the cottage. Additionally, there are smoke detectors, a carbon monoxide detector, and a fire extinguisher on site in case of emergency.

Entertainment inside the cottage

The hutch is filled with games, puzzles, and cards. You are welcome to use them. There are many books throughout the cottage that you may enjoy as well. Field guides for birds, flowers, ferns and the like, along with binoculars are located on the wicker shelves. Seals, bald eagles and a myriad of other sea birds visit the ocean just off the deck regularly! Our only request is that you leave them as you found them at the end of your stay. A card table is located in the front hallway closet should you need an extra table for a puzzle, etc.

Entertainment outside of the cottage

Just outside your door is the mouth of the Skillings River opening onto Frenchman Bay. The lights you will see across the Bay at night are the lights of Bar Harbor, a 20-30 minute drive. There is a wonderful map hanging in our entryway that will give you a better sense of your location.

At low tide you will find a gravel beach to explore. Be mindful of the rocks… They are wonderful to scramble over, but can be very slippery. The water is generally quite deep and ALWAYS cold!

If you enjoy walking, the driveway is a good place to begin. You may see a deer or wild turkey as you climb the hill in the early morning or evening. The blueberry field at the top of the driveway does NOT belong to us. The blueberries are harvested in the late summer and are wonderful to look at but should not be touched. At the top of the driveway is Seal Point Road. If you turn right it will lead you through countryside that is sparsely populated until you reach a working lobster pound (but closed to the public) at the end of the road (a looong walk but a short drive). If you turn left at the end of the driveway (called Marlboro Beach Rd in this direction!) you will pass by a number of houses and then arrive at Marlboro Beach - a sand and gravel beach on Raccoon Cove with a wonderful view of the mountains of Acadia, about a mile’s walk. Another “short walk” can be taken by veering off to the left on your way to Marlboro Beach onto Maxwell Avenue, a dead-end but fun to look at some lovely ocean homes.

If you’re looking for excitement outside of Lamoine, we have left a folder on the desktop PC in the downstairs bedroom filled with suggestions for hikes, rainy day activities, favorite restaurants and tourist info for you. .We’ve also included brief directions to the Laundromat, grocery store, Acadia and Bar Harbor in this folder. We simply ask that you please use the computer responsibly.

When leaving the cottage for a day trip, please remember that ocean weather changes quickly. Close windows and sliding doors before you leave to prevent a sudden summer storm from damaging the cottage and catching you by surprise.

No SMoking

Finally, we would like to remind you that this is a smoke-free cottage. We anticipate that you will refrain from smoking throughout your stay with us. Thank you.

Enjoy!

Please take a moment to look around upon check-in. If you find something amiss, please call us immediately so that we can correct the situation. We hope you have a wonderful stay! Please sign our guestbook on the coffee table. We’d love to hear from you about your experience.

Sincerely,

Keith and Michele Havey
